Ok losers, today we're gonna learn how to do a cool little epic ass gamer move called "Torrenting." But first, I'm gonna felony assault you with some epic knowledge!
Alr so the internet is basically a big network of computers all talking to each other. When you download something from a website, they're usually storing that file on a special computer called a server. That's how 99% of it all works. Let's take YouTube for example. One person uploads a video, that video is then stored on YouTube's servers, and you access it by going to youtube.com. Well, imagine if instead of the first person uploading the video to YouTube, they just sent it to you directly. That's called peer to peer (p2p). Think of it as cutting out the middle man, if you will.
Remember Napster? Limewire? Those were both p2p services. One person would have the file already, and you could come along and download it directly from them. This was cool, but there are a couple issues. Downloading something from someone like a state over was fine, but Downloading from someone in Russia? Or China? Or Australia? Yeah good fucking luck. Not to mention, any individual can host any file they please, including malicious ones (usually random trolls posting rick rolls, or viruses). But that's where the bittorrent protocol comes in.
What bittorrent does differently is that it downloads stuff in clusters, as opposed to the file being one lump sum. Which might not sound like a huge difference, but the real innovation is the fact you can download the same file from multiple people at once. Where old p2p had one person hosting it, now you can theoretically have unlimited (tho usually only like 5 or 6 people) hosting at once, and you can spread the load across them. This means faster downloads that are harder to trace, which is great for our purposes. It also means more eyes on one specific file, so it's less likely you'll come across a virus or random troll.
You're gonna need a couple things before we get into it.
A VPN service (I reccomend Mullvad if you're down to pay)
Adblock on whatever browser you use (uBlock Origin on Firefox is ideal)
You can easily find a ton of cool websites for this stuff here. For this tutorial, I'm gonna download a random album I found through the previous wiki.
Find the thing you want, and click on the little magnet icon
It should open a little popup, open the link with qBittorrent if it gives you options
You should have a similar window open. Here, you can decide where you want to save the file (it defaults to your downloads folder, keep it there if you want it doesn't really matter.)
Click "Ok" and the download will start!
Once it finishes downloading, it begins seeding, which means other people can download it from you now! to stop, just select it by clicking on it once, then click the red trash can. To exit qBittorrent, click "File" then "Exit"
